For several years, The Buffalo Broadcasters Association has been storing and is now in the process of having gifted to us, all the old newsfilm that went into the preparation of newscasts on Channels 2 and 4 during the ‘60’s and 70’s. We are working on a plan to receive the U-matic tape that recorded later efforts. This is an irreplaceable visual history of Western New York during the time Buffalo was booming. It includes all the fires, political maneuvering, and the day-to-day reporting that made up life in our area. But the film continues to deteriorate and before it does so, we need to catalog the miles of film, and transfer everything to digital memory.
This is a real treasure trove of history! We’ve managed the critical first step – to save all this historic film. Our goal now is three fold:
Digitize the film and tape to preserve its content for future generations of students, researchers, and producers.
Catalog and index the content of the film and tape by creating a digital database, which will make what we have easy to access by topic or time period.
Build a facility where those images can be stored and accessed. Such a facility would include climate controlled storage for the original source material.
This is a major project and could cost us over $1 million. With the aid of some small grants, we were able to have professional archivists do a preliminary survey of what we have, and lay out a plan for the project.
We now have received a challenge grant of $10,000 from the Harnisch Foundation of New York to continue with the work. We will receive this amount only if we can raise $10,000 from individuals . We are just over halfway to reaching this goal.
Will you help us preserve this Buffalo history, as seen through the eyes of our own local broadcasters? All donations will be recorded on our Honor Roll of supporters and your gift is tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.
Please respond today by sending your donation to:
Buffalo Broadcasters Association, 112 Knowlton Street, Kenmore, NY 14217 so we can meet the terms of the challenge.
If you have any film, video or airchecks that you can donate to this project please contact The Buffalo Broadcasters Association at bflobroadcasters@aol.com .
Thanks in advance for your help. We will keep you posted on our progress!
