I can remember WGR had the two characters on their ID slides but I didn't realize what the represented till I saw it on the BBA site. I also vaguely remember seeing the NBC show "Queen For A Day" on WBUF-TV 17. We had a Philco console with a UHF tuner. Later on WNED-TV-17 came on the scene and our school used it to show some educational programs.
WBEN of course had "Meet The Millers" as well as the great locally produced Santa shows that I had forgotten about until Channel 4 came out with their great 50 years of Channel 4 VHS Tape. Jungle Jay Nelson from WKBW radio hosted the Saturday afternoon Tarzan movies on WKBW-TV.
Canada also played a role. There was CHCH-TV-11 CFTO-TV-9 and at the time CBLT-TV-6. They were great to watch because they showed many of our American series on different days so if you missed your favorite show you had a chance to catch it on Canadian TV. This was before home video tape. All the Canadian stations came in with just an indoor antenna although they were a bit fuzzy. Channel 11 was the strongest of the 3 and sometimes came in almost snow free!
We were very lucky to have 3 fine commercial TV stations in Buffalo during the early days of TV. WGR-TV, WBEN-TV and WKBW-TV.
